They brought the house down at last year’s Arts Festival. Hot Club of Cowtown has grown to be the most globe-trotting, hard-swinging Western Swing trio on the planet. From early days busking for tips in San Diego's Balboa Park, the band has grown and developed into a formidable international sensation.

The Hot Club's ever-growing presence on the international festival scene has grown with its relentless touring over the years alongside the release of five critically acclaimed CDs on American Roots label HighTone Records. In August 2008 the Hot Club's sixth CD, "The Best of the Hot Club of Cowtown," a hand-picked, band-picked, twenty-song retrospective, was released by Shout!Factory.

"Jump Up On The Waterfront" (Culinary)

Fri, 07/23/2010 - 6:00pm

To sample the best food and drink the area has to offer, your best bet may be to “jump” on down to the waterfront.  The Fall River Chamber of Commerce and dozens of area businesses will make the Carousel and waterfront their home for one evening.

New this year is the Carousel location. All the glass doors on the first floor will be open, allowing patrons to enjoy the lovely scenery of the waterfront, and a tent will be set up over the patio. And the Carousel itself will be open for rides from 6 to 7 p.m. — sure to appeal to the kid in all of us.

Landry said Yankee Spirits of Swansea is the new beverage sponsor this year, and she said, as in past years, a wide variety of food vendors will present some of their signature dishes.  Participants include Patti’s Pierogis, LePage’s, Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits, Mesa 21, Fall River Grill, Minervas II, Venus de Milo and Lafrance Hospitality.

The event features music from DJ Don Hunt, as well as an open bar. Tickets are $50 per person and can be obtained by calling the Chamber at 508-676-8226.

Food or beverage vendors who are interested in participating in Jump Up on the Waterfront, call the Chamber or call Lori Landry at 508-676-5777.

John Davis Caravan Celebrates Mark Twain (Music)

Sat, 07/17/2010 - 8:00pm
Location=Narrows Center for the Arts, 16 Anawan St., Fall River

On the heels of his enthusiastically-received Narrows debut last summer, pianist John Davis returns to Southern New England sporting a brand new Newport Classic CD. Entitled Halleys Comet: Around the Piano with Mark Twain & John Davis, this new recording pays musical tribute to Americas most famous author, Mark Twain, whose career, like Davis', lies at the intersection between white and black culture and high and low culture in American society.

Released one hundred years to the day since Twains death on April 21st, 1910, Halley's Comet also honors the 175th anniversary of Twains birth and the 125th anniversary of the publication of his most influential book, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, all being celebrated in 2010. At the Narrows, Davis will perform pieces from the CD with connections to Twain, interspersed with readings of often hilarious, sometimes appalling, and always fascinating quotations from Twain and his contemporaries.

And don't be surprised if Davis plays Twain-related works from John Davis Plays Blind Tom and Marshfield Tornado: John Davis Plays Blind Boone, his two earlier, critically-acclaimed, hit Newport Classic recordings that have defined, excavated, and disseminated a previously-unacknowledged American roots music.

Rosie Ledet and "The Zydeco Playboys" (Music)

Fri, 07/16/2010 - 8:00pm
Location=Narrows Center for the Arts, 16 Anawan St., Fall River

Brimming with coy sensuality, Rosie’s music is fresh and daring while still retaining its links to its bayou Creole heritage. Rosie has a rare combination of talent, not only in the zydeco world, but in any musical genre. She can write top-notch award winning songs, hang with the best of them on her instrument, and can sing circles around her peers. Rosie is among the few zydeco artists who still sing and write some of their own material in Creole French.
