The Diabetes Association

The mission of the Diabetes Association Inc. is to improve the health and well being of the communities that DAI serve by advancing diabetes prevention, early detection and disease management.The Diabetes Association Inc. holds a plethora of programs for adults, youth and families. With offices located at 170 Pleasant St in Fall River and 26 Caroline St in New Bedford, there is always someone to assist with any diabetes questions or concerns. Staff are also available for one on one consultations. 

Individual Spotlight - Matt Santos

Matt Santos and his wife, Beth, have been working full force since the start of the challenge. Matt is a diabetic and, with Beth, has be working diligently to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. He works in a kitchen and is around food all of the time. He conquers each day to the fullest and he and his wife are supporting each other each step of the way. Matt's look out on all of this is, "Fitness requires work and effort.

This Week's Fitness Challenge

The next Fitness Challenge is coming this Saturday, February 20. It will be at Industrial Park beginning at 9am. Each participant will choose their route at the beginning. You will be required to time yourself. The walking path at Industrial Park is a newly implemented walking path that opened this past fall. It was one of the many new walking paths within the city that you can take advantage of any day to help reach your Fall River Fitness Challenge goals.

Second Fitness Challenge Offers a Chilly 5K

The second Fitness Challenge, held on February 6, 2010, was led by CD-REC program director Jamison Souza who challenged teams and individuals to walk from CD-REC headquarters on Bank Street down the hill to Battleship Cove and then to walk the mile-long boardwalk to the Iwo Jima Memorial monument at Bicentennial Park and back to CD-REC. Over twenty-five Challenge participants took advantage of the opportunity to increase their fitness despite the wintry weather.  Click here to see the web page and here to see the YouTube video.

Recipe of the Week!!

Garlic and Herb Yogurt Dip!

1 cup   nonfat plain yogurt

1 tsp   garlic powder

1/2 tsp  black pepper

1/2 tsp dry Italian mix herbs

1/2 tsp dry basil 

1/8 tsp  seasoning salt (your favorite) 

Small platter of fresh mix veggies (broccoli, carrots, celery, etc.)

Preparation:

1. In a small bowl combine all ingredients except the fresh veggies; mix until well combined; taste and adjust seasonings as needed. (easy on the salt)

Trying to get with the program

I really have no clue how to work within this structure because I have always been going it alone.  I took the first step on January 25. Accountability is a good thing. Second step was to go to the meetings on Wed. Weigh in today. To find out more about what the CD rec has to offer.

Fitness Challenge Draws Hundreds

The 2010 Fitness Challenge, the third offered by the Diabetes Association, Inc. (DAI), Children In Balance, Community Development Recreation (CD-REC), the Fall River YMCA and Healthy Lives Fall River, held its initial weigh-in and health fair on January 9th at the Veterans' Memorial on Bank Street.
