Fitness Challenge Draws Hundreds

The 2010 Fitness Challenge, the third offered by the Diabetes Association, Inc. (DAI), Children In Balance, Community Development Recreation (CD-REC), the Fall River YMCA and Healthy Lives Fall River, held its initial weigh-in and health fair on January 9th at the Veterans' Memorial on Bank Street.

Fitness Challenge Finale celebrates 5,057 pounds lost!

The Fall River Fitness Challenge held its 2009 Finale at the Eagle Restaurant on May 9th celebrating the conclusion of the four-month series that began on January 10th. Over seventy-five participants and their supporters got to her remarks from Fitness Instructor Amy Jones, Mark Kruger from the NBC television show "The Biggest Loser, 2008 Challenge winner Daryl Parrent and Healthy City Fall River coordinator Dr. David Weed.

4th Challenge Event capitalizes on recent warm weather

Participants in the 4thChallenge Event of the 2009 Fitness Challenge gathered at CD-REC on Bank Street on a gorgeous sunny spring day with temperatures in the 60s for their walk to Bicentennial Park on March 7, 2009. Walkers spectacular views of Heritage Park, the Battleship USS Massachusetts, and the Taunton River from the mile-long boardwalk. Executive Director Grace Gerling, who ran the entire course, said "This was a terrific workout for those who have been getting in shape during the four-month Challenge and a perfect way to take advantage of the unusually warm spring day." The overall five-mile course included two one-mile round trips along the boardwalk to Bicentennial Park, as well as a long walk to the park from Bank Street. Go to www.gfrpartners.com/094thFitnessChallenge.html for more photos and text describing the event.

Second Fitness Challenge gets hearts pumping

Participants in the 2009 Fitness Challenge had the chance to ramp up their cardiovascular health by visiting ten stations at Community Development Recreationheadquarters on February 7, 2009 (www.gfrpartners.com/092ndFitnessChallenge.html). In recognition of the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women event the day before, participants were also able to get their blood sugar and cholesterol levels by staff from Southcoast Hospitals. Melyssa Boudray of the Providence office of the Heart Association was also on hand to give out information and to sign participants up for the Start Walkingprogram. Fitness instructor Amy Jonesthen challenged each participant to complete each of ten different exercises, including knee lifts, shoulder presses, bicep curls, half squats, kicks and arm extensions. "This was not an easy challenge" noted Jones, "but it showed people what they can do if they try" she added. The event was one of a series of bi-weekly events that will take place throughout the four-month Challenge period. Join us on Saturday January 10, 2009 from 10AM- 2PM at the CD-REC facility located at 72 Bank Street to sign up/weigh in for the program.

Also take advantage of a Wellness Fair that will run during the sign-ups from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visit dozens of exhibits and information booths to learn more about how to get healthier in 2009!
