Healthy City Fall River

This Summer, Take the Soda-Free Challenge

On a typical day in the United States, 80% of youth and 63% of adults consume at least one sugar-sweetened beverage. The average person eats almost 100 pounds of sugar a year—that's more than half a cup of sugar and 420 extra calories each day! Sugary sodas are the single biggest source. Teens now consume twice as much soda as milk, though soda has no nutritional value.

Because of these facts, and the rising incidence of overweight children in Fall River, the Healthy City Fall River initiative is launching a Soda-Free Summer Pledge campaign to encourage young people to voluntarily reduce their consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages this summer.

Community Gardens are growing!

This is the time of year when nearly everyone starts to notice the explosion of plants all around us and when some of us start to think about putting a spade into the ground to get our gardens started. Nothing beats a warm spring day and the chance to feel the texture of the earth as we get it ready for new plants or seeds!

Third Annual Peace by Piece Summit: A Day Full of Impact

The Peace by Piece Summit grows every year. This year was a great success, with many collaborating organizations and volunteers, and almost too many fun activities and challenging workshops to choose from. The video below (by Dr. Dave Weed with introductory slideshow presentation by Kristen Gunderson and song by Matisyahu) includes some highlights of the day. If you missed this year's summit, be sure to join us next March! Click here to view pictures from the Summit.

Keep up with other peace activities and events on MyFallRiver.org, and share your efforts toward peace on MyFallRiver.org (or by contacting United Neighbors of Fall River).

Tobacco ordinance supported in first reading before City Council

Members of the BOLD (Building Our Lives Drug-free) Coalition Teens Against Drug Abuse (TADA) gave citizen input before the Fall River City Council on March 8, 2011 in the first reading to support an amendment to the current tobacco sales ordinance that would restrict the sale of e-cigarettes to teens, increase the fines for sales to minors and prohibit tobacco sales in educational settings and pharmacies.
